FAQs

The Clean Label Promise (Purity & Sourcing)

Is your salt organic and non-GMO?

Pure salt cannot legally be certified “organic” or “non-GMO” by the USDA because it is a naturally occurring mineral, not an agricultural crop. However, our pure salts are perfectly organic-compliant and non-GMO compliant, containing zero additives and processed in an SQF Quality Code certified facility. Furthermore, all of our Artisan Salt Blends and Turkey Brines are officially Certified USDA Organic and Non-GMO because they contain agricultural ingredients like organic herbs and chilies.

Is your salt refined?

No, our salt is unrefined. Highly refined table salts are stripped of their natural trace minerals and often bleached. We stand by our Clean Label Promise: we source and process organic- and non-GMO compliant products with zero additives, ensuring you get the natural ocean moisture, trace minerals, and authentic flavor of the salt.

Do your salts contain anti-caking agents or iodine?

Absolutely not. Standard grocery store table salt often contains artificial iodine, dextrose (sugar), and chemical anti-caking agents like silicon dioxide. At San Francisco Salt Company, we strictly adhere to a Clean Label Promise. Our salts contain zero artificial additives, flowing agents, or preservatives.

Food Safety & Testing

Is your salt tested for heavy metals and impurities?

Yes. Food safety is our highest priority. All of our salts undergo rigorous purity screening at our in-house, SQF Quality Code certified facility. Heavy metals are tested on every lot of salt at our ISO 17025 certified third-party lab. We strictly validate our products to ensure they meet or exceed all culinary safety standards.

Is your salt tested for microplastics?

Purity is the foundation of our Clean Label Promise. While microplastics are a known ecological challenge in global ocean waters, we mitigate this risk through highly selective sourcing and rigorous processing standards rather than relying on end-of-line testing alone.

  • Ancient Sourcing: Salts like our authentic Sherpa Pink® Himalayan are mined from pristine, ancient sea beds that crystallized millions of years before modern plastics existed.
  • Strict Filtration & GMPs: For our ocean-harvested sea salts, we exclusively partner with vetted suppliers operating under international food safety management systems. They employ advanced Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and HACCP principles designed to filter and control physical, biological, and chemical hazards.

Validated Quality: Finally, every batch is thoroughly inspected and processed in our own in-house, SQF Quality Code Certified Culinary Hub to ensure it meets our exacting standards for culinary safety and purity.

How can I get a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for my purchase?

As part of our strict Clean Label Promise and commitment to transparency, we are happy to provide a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for your salt. Our in-house Quality & Regulatory team meticulously documents every batch that passes through our SQF Quality Code Certified Culinary Hub. To receive the exact specifications and testing data for your order, simply email your request—along with your order details—to customerservice@sfsalt.com. A lot number is required to receive a COA. Lot numbers are located on the back of the package near the expiration date.

Culinary Application & Shelf Life

Why is my salt clumping together?

Because we refuse to use synthetic anti-caking chemicals, our unrefined salts naturally retain ocean moisture and can occasionally clump if exposed to humidity. This is a mark of purity! Simply give the shaker or bag a firm tap, or easily break the crystals apart with your fingers or a utensil. The next step is to ensure you completely seal the shaker or bag when not in use.

Does salt expire?

Pure, uninfused sea salt and rock salt do not expire. Because salt is a natural mineral and a preservative itself, it has an indefinite shelf life. However, when we blend pure salt with organic herbs or delicate ingredients, the aromatic intensity will naturally fade over time. For peak culinary flavor, we recommend the following timelines:

  • Pure Sea & Himalayan Salts: Indefinite shelf life.
  • Artisan Blends (Garlic, Rosemary, Chilies): Best used within 24 to 30 months.
  • Italian Black Truffle Sea Salt: Best used within 12 to 18 months to preserve its delicate, highly volatile aromatic compounds.

Shipping & Orders

Do you offer a bulk salt option for kitchens that can't accommodate a 50lb bag?

Yes. We engineered the 40lb Chef's Case as a smart salt solution specifically for micro-businesses, boutique kitchens, and serious foodies. Standard commercial salt typically comes in unwieldy 50lb or 55lb sacks that are difficult to lift, pour, and store.

Our Chef's Case solves this bulk-storage problem by packing 40lbs of our premium, unrefined salt into two ergonomic 20lb Chef's Bags shipped in a single box.

  • Ergonomic Handling: The 20lb bags are significantly safer and easier for your staff to lift, carry, and pour into kitchen bins than a massive 50lb sack.
  • Freshness Control: You can keep one bag factory-sealed in your pantry while actively utilizing the other, perfectly preserving the salt's natural ocean moisture and trace minerals.

Micro-Business Value: It provides the wholesale volume your growing production demands without overwhelming your storage space.

Where will my order ship from?

Your orders are meticulously packaged and shipped fresh from our SQF Quality Code Certified Culinary Hub in the heart of the U.S. While our heritage began at San Francisco’s iconic Pier 39, the massive growth of our salt-loving community required us to expand into our strategically central location in Southwest Missouri, allowing us to provide rapid, coast-to-coast delivery.

Why is my favorite item out of stock?

Because we rely on natural harvests and authentic sourcing rather than synthetic manufacturing, items can occasionally go out of stock when demand spikes or we are awaiting fresh shipments from our global suppliers. We restock regularly. Use the “Notify Me” tab on the product page, and we’ll alert you the moment it returns!

How can I get a promo code or discount for my order?
