The Culinary Secret for Everyday Gourmet.

Introduce your kitchen to one of the most revered cooking salts in the world: French Grey Sea Salt (Sel Gris). Hand-harvested using traditional Celtic methods from the pristine, clay-lined salt ponds of the Guérande region in Brittany, France, this unrefined salt takes its signature light grey color directly from the mineral-rich clay it rests on. Unlike fragile finishing salts, Sel Gris is a hearty, moisture-rich cooking salt packed with trace minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. It delivers a bold, complex salinity that holds up beautifully to high heat, making it the perfect approachable upgrade for roasting, baking, and grilling.

    Ingredients:

French grey Sea salt. This product does not supply Iodide a necessary nutrient

    Grain Size Usage:

    • Fine Grain: Stone-ground to a finer texture, this grain is the ultimate premium replacement for everyday cooking salt. Because it retains its natural moisture, it melts beautifully into sauces, doughs, and everyday seasoning blends.
    • Coarse Grain: Featuring dense, moisture-rich crystals, this size is perfect for creating robust spice rubs, encrusting prime cuts of meat before roasting, or adding to a specialized ceramic salt mill. Because Sel Gris retains natural ocean moisture, we recommend using a grinder with a ceramic mechanism to prevent corrosion.

    FAQs

Both come from the Guérande marshes of Brittany, France, but they're harvested differently. Fleur de Sel forms on the surface of the water and is hand-skimmed before it sinks, it's delicate, moist, and best used as a finishing salt. Sel Gris crystallizes on the clay floor and is raked from the bottom, it's moister, grainier, more mineral-forward, and better suited for cooking and brining. Fleur de Sel is the more premium finish; Sel Gris is the workhorse.

Coarse is large, moist, and irregular, best for brining, salt crusts, and applications where the grain needs to hold its structure. Fine is a smaller, more workable grain that dissolves faster, better for everyday cooking, finishing, and blending. Both carry the same Guérande mineral character.

They're very similar, both are unrefined, grey, moist salts harvested from the clay-bottom tidal marshes of the French Atlantic coast. 'Celtic salt' is a marketing term; 'Sel Gris' and 'Grey Sea Salt' are the traditional names. Our French Grey Sea Salt is sourced from Guérande, the region historically associated with the highest quality Sel Gris production.

Sel Gris is French for 'grey salt.' The name refers to the natural grey color of the salt, which comes from the clay-rich floor of the Guérande salt marshes where it crystallizes. It has been harvested this way in Brittany for centuries.

The salt gets its distinctive light grey color and damp texture from the natural clay-lined salt pans of Brittany, France, where it is hand-harvested. This unrefined process ensures the salt retains its natural ocean moisture and high concentration of beneficial trace minerals, including magnesium and calcium.

Because Sel Gris retains a high level of natural moisture, we highly recommend using a grinder with a ceramic mechanism. Standard metal grinding mechanisms can rust or clog when exposed to the dampness of authentic French Grey Sea Salt.

This proves not all Salts are created equal

Order this salt! In fact, order this and some other SF salts. When you get them have a spouse or friend their for the opening. Open them and shut your eyes and inhale each bag slowly. Dip your wetted finger and taste them. Compare them with your box of Diamond Kosher. You will never go back. Each salt gives a distinct uniqueness to the food you are cooking. People may say, "why is this better than the last time you made it?" They won' the able to say it is the salt, but you will know. Truly a change maker in your kitchen. Order this salt!

    French Grey Fine Ground Process

I purchased a 5lb bag of the french grey fine ground and, when opened, it appeared much drier than previous purchases and, in addition, it had a "chemical" or "smokey" smell. Customer service was grand and replaced the bag however, although the salt appeared less dry, the smell remained. I am wondering if the process for this salt has changed

    Great company so far

We have been using this salt for a few years already and love it.We used to buy the celtic sea salt, but then wanted in larger quantities, and for a better price (I mean who would want to spend hundreds of $ on salt?).Where I come from, this type of salt is the cheapest you can find, and my parents were actually laughing at me spending this much money on gray salt.
Anyway, since using this salt we kept our sodium levels at the minimum range, and I mean the lowest number within normal range (not that was too big to begin with, but still kept it at the great numbers for years now).
I usually buy the 20 lbs bag,as we are a big family, and I cook every single meal.
We also tried this company's smoked salt and loved those too.

    Odd Aroma

I love the French Grey Salt, and usually buy it in bulk for cooking and for making salt scrubs I was a little disappointed this time around because upon opening the bag, I smelled an odd aroma, like the salt had taken on the smell of some of the flavored salts that SF Salt Co. carries. It’s really off-putting. Otherwise, I’d give my current salt inventory 5 stars.

    Da Best Salt!

I love this salt! Too bad it was our of stock for weeks during 4Q 2017 and early 2018 - I was forced to buy another grey salt and when it is depleted I'll be clicking back to SFSalt.com!

French gray sea salt is amazing

I don't know if it's the lower content of sodium per half teaspoon not exactly sure... the most amazing thing the salt really doesn't have that I would describe it as battery acid taste but you would imagine a battery acid with taste like that you find in the cheap table salt it is amazing I will continue to stock up on this the rest of my life it's that good I feel spoiled

    Fun to cook with

This gourmet French grey salt is fun to cook with. It has a concentrated but subtle flavor and a thicker texture than table salt. You need less as 1/2 tsp is 16% of your daily salt allowance. It has no anti-caking agents. It is unprocessed and sourced for purity. Other features to love about it according to San Francisco Salt Company:* 100% Natural French Grey Salt ~ no trace minerals* Preferred salt choice by the top chefs in France and around the world* Carries the 'Nature & Progrs' certification label from France.* Hand harvested salt, using techniques more than a thousand years old* Mild flavor, suitable for adding flavor to a wide variety of dishesYou can feel like you are a graduate of the Cordon Bleu using this salt. I put some in a turkey chili I made recently and a chicken-rice-vegetable soup tonight and it tastes great. The company has a handy bamboo, magnet-closing tub to pour it into if you want to take it out of the self-sealing bag it comes in. You may wish to order that, too, if you cook a lot and like putting a pinch of gourmet salt into dishes.

I love what grey salt does for a dish and this brand is no exception.

    Online Review

"I love this salt - it's exactly like the ""Celtic Sea Salt"" brand, but less costly. It's easy to control the degree of saltiness which results when it's sprinkled on food at the table. Himalayan pink salt is much harder for me to control - I often end up with too much, as it seems to have a more concentrated sodium content. This salt is very pleasantly airy with regard to its crystal size and configuration, and it tastes great. I plan to use this exclusively in the kitchen and at the table. I've ordered this twice now, and each time the company included a very nice little gift. My first gift was a bamboo salt spoon, which I love, and the second was a sample packet of alder smoked sea salt."
